What are our obligations to God?
According to the Bible, we have obligations to God. These are duties and responsibilities that we have
because of who God is and our relationship to Him.
We owe God worship and reverence.
God is worthy of worship because He is our Creator. You are worthy, O Lord, To receive glory and
honor and power; For You created all things, And by Your will they exist and were created (Revelation 4:11).
Give unto the LORD the glory due to His name; Worship the LORD in the beauty of holiness (Psalm
29:2).
The gospel commands all people to worship God. John wrote: Then I saw another angel flying in the
midst of heaven, having the everlasting gospel to preach to those who dwell on the earth - to every nation, tribe,
tongue, and people - saying with a loud voice, ‘Fear God and give glory to Him, for the hour of His judgment
has come; and worship Him who made heaven and earth, the sea and springs of water’ (Revelation 14:6, 7).
We must give account to God for what we do.
Solomon wrote: Let us hear the conclusion of the whole matter: Fear God and keep His
commandments, For this is the whole duty of man. For God will bring every work into judgment, Including
every secret thing, Whether good or evil (Ecclesiastes 12:13, 14).
For we must all appear before the judgment seat of Christ, that each one may receive the things done
in the body, according to what he has done, whether good or bad (2 Corinthians 5:10).
Then I saw a great white throne and Him who sat on it, from whose face the earth and the heaven fled
away. And there was found no place for them. And I saw the dead, small and great, standing before God, and
books were opened. And another book was opened, which is the Book of Life. And the dead were judged
according to their works, by the things which were written in the books. The sea gave up the dead who were in it,
and Death and Hades delivered up the dead who were in them. And they were judged, each one according to his
works (Revelation 20:11-13).
We are to place our trust in God for guidance.
Trust in the LORD with all your heart, And lean not on your own understanding; In all your ways
acknowledge Him, And He shall direct your paths (Proverbs 3:5, 6).
We owe God love.
We love Him because He first loved us (1 John 4:19).
To love God is our greatest obligation. Jesus said to him, ‘You shall love the Lord your God with all
your heart, with all your soul, and with all your mind.’ This is the first and great commandment (Matthew
22:37, 38).
We owe God obedience.
Obedience flows from our love for God. For this is the love of God, that we keep His commandments.
And His commandments are not burdensome (1 John 5:3).
Jesus said, If you love me, keep my commands.
We owe God service.
I beseech you therefore, brethren, by the mercies of God, that you present your bodies a living
sacrifice, holy, acceptable to God, which is your reasonable service (Romans 12:1).
We owe God gratitude.
Every good gift and every perfect gift is from above, and comes down from the Father of lights, with
whom there is no variation or shadow of turning (James 1:17).
Make a joyful shout to the Lord, all you lands! Serve the Lord with gladness; Come before His
presence with singing. Know that the Lord, He is God; It is He who has made us, and not we ourselves; We are
His people and the sheep of His pasture. Enter into His gates with thanksgiving, And into His courts with praise.
Be thankful to Him, and bless His name (Psalm 100:1-4).
Our lives are to bring glory to God.
Everyone who is called by My name, Whom I have created for My glory; I have formed him, yes, I
have made him (Isaiah 43:7).
Jesus tells His followers: You are the light of the world. A city that is set on a hill cannot be hidden.
Nor do they light a lamp and put it under a basket, but on a lampstand, and it gives light to all who are in the
house. Let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works and glorify your Father in heaven
(Matthew 5:14-16).
